Howard Wuelfing talks PROTO PUNK

Lightning Records lightningrecs@gmail.com 9/27/13 to Howard

....I’m writing because we want to put out a few tapes by some proto/punk bands and I was curious if you had any ideas or recommendations of folks that might be interested in being involved like half japanese or mike watt or other friends.

The idea behind the label is about the transcendent spirit of rock n roll but musically, we are open to all types of music..........

to me

if yr talking the earliest generation of punks that’d be

The Count
Thundertrain
Mickey Clean and The Mezz
Fox Pass
Willie Alexander Boom Boom Band in Boston

Polystyrene Money Jazz Band Die Electric Eels
Mirrors
Pere Ubu

Rocket From The Tombs in Cleveland

The Overkill (different from the metal band) Slickee Boys
The Look
Nicky Butane And The Lighters

in DC

The Gizmos
MX 80 Sound Bloomington IN

NYC of course is a mess coz there were so many bands there and the transition from Glam Rock like the New York Dolls, Brats and Wayne County to pre punk like Suicide, Television, Heartbreakers, David Johansen Band, Dictators and Patti Smith - was very ill defined. And they had a whole power pop movement that co-existed with the punk scene per se like The Marbles, The Planets, etc.

but plenty of “late” period NYC punks (meaning about 1978 when the whole thing was starting to go mersh) like The Erasers etc.
